The maternal mortality ratio in Ethiopia is among the highest in the world at 412 per 100,000 live births (Ethiopia DHS 2016) — more than 34 times higher than in developed countries (12 per 100,000; WHO 2016), and well above the average for developing countries (239 per 100,000; WHO 2016).
The under-5 mortality rate is similarly high, at 67 deaths per 1,000 children (Ethiopia DHS 2016) — almost 13 times higher than in developed countries (WHO 2016).
We are transforming Bushulo into a Mother and Child Specialty Centre to reduce maternal and under-5 mortality, joining the shared goal set by the WHO and the Ethiopia Ministry of Health.
